Shoppers and sellers, Tlacolula market Photo
by Tony Mindling Traditional
clothing styles characterize rural villages. The scene is the market in
Tlacolula, where people have come to shop in preparation for the Day of
the Dead. A woman from San Marcos, with wide red ribbons twined in her
braids, shops for flowers being sold by people of the neighboring village
of San Bartolome. The pottery in the forground was made by Leopoldo Barranco
of Coyotepec, and is characterized by the black metallic sheen that developes
during high-firing in a sealed underground kiln.
